Transforming the Indian Classroom

In a groundbreaking conversation, neuroscientist and educator Sai Gaddam discusses how traditional education systems are becoming increasingly disconnected from real-world demands. Through his micro-school initiative, Comini Learning, Gaddam demonstrates how personalized learning environments, supported by AI technology, can nurture individual growth paths. His approach challenges the conventional assessment-driven model, advocating instead for a system that values problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and creative thinking.

The New Learning Paradigm

Gaddam’s innovative education model leverages AI-powered tools and experiential learning methods, including carefully designed board games and interactive activities. This approach helps students develop critical thinking skills while maintaining their natural curiosity. Rather than focusing on standardized testing, the emphasis is on holistic assessment that considers multiple competencies across various domains. The model recognizes that success in the modern world requires more than academic achievements – it demands the ability to navigate ambiguity, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and understand that education is a non-zero-sum game where everyone can succeed through different paths.

About Sai Gaddam

Sai Gaddam, Co-Founder of Comini Learning, brings a unique blend of neuroscience, technology, and education to his work in transforming early learning. After graduating from IIT Madras, inspired by V.S. Ramachandran‘s “Phantoms in the Brain,” he pursued computational neuroscience at Boston University. His entrepreneurial journey includes founding Kernel Insights and developing MakkhiChoose, which grew to serve hundreds of thousands of users. Currently, through Comini Learning, he implements Finnish educational principles adapted for Indian children, focusing on experiential learning and whole-child development. He’s also developing Giffie, an AI-powered educational tool that combines his expertise in neuroscience and learning technologies.

Five Point Summary

PERSONALIZED PATHWAYS: Holistic evaluation should focus on learning attitudes and problem-solving approaches rather than just test scores and grades.

TECHNOLOGY AS AN ENABLER: Education must shift from memorization to teaching adaptability, as AI tools transform how we process and apply knowledge.

THE MICRO-SCHOOL REVOLUTION: Small, personalized learning environments allow educators to truly understand each child’s unique development journey.

REAL-WORLD READINESS: The current education system shields students from real-world challenges; practical exposure should start early.

GROWTH FOR ALL: Moving away from competitive rankings to recognize that every child can succeed through different paths and timelines.

Q1 Sai’s Journey: From IIT to Neuroscience

Swami

So Sai, given what you’re doing today, how did this journey happen and what was the tipping point for you to take whatever decisions that you have taken till date? So how has it happened and can you tell me your backstory where it all began and how did it happen?

Sai Gaddam Sure, so I’m in the education space now. My wife Priyanka and I ran a micro school in Bombay. Also a neuroscientist by training. I’ve written a couple of books, the most recent one, The Journey of the Mind. And then before that I was an engineer. I graduated from IIT Madras a long time back… discovered neuroscience in my final year there thanks to this amazing book, The Phantoms of the Brain by V .S. Ramachandran. That is what led me to take up neuroscience… been 22 years now since I’ve gone down that path. Did a PhD, went on to write these books, then was an entrepreneur. I came back to India. This was, PhD was in Boston, Boston University. Very, was very fortunate to have landed up there for reasons I guess…for me was just a very random choice when I did take that choice… anyway, so did that, came back to India, worked on a second book, I’ve done some consulting work, been an entrepreneur for more than 10 years now. And what we’re doing now, this is the latest version. This is finally, I think, where all the diversions and excursions and interests intersect and it’s a happy place to be for me.

Q2 The Book That Reshaped Sai’s Mind

Swami

Fantastic. So what did V.S. Ramachandran’s book, The Phantom of the Brain, what did it do to you? So what was really the trigger that got you interested in something like this?

Sai Gaddam I think it was the first book that helped me realize that if you think about the biology and the brain, especially if you have done conventional schooling in India, there is a sense that it is very taxonomic, very fact-oriented, that you have to know the taxonomy, have to know
